My Summary of The Subject - History of Art and Design 1

There is no way we can escape from this subject. However, personally i felt that the content of the subject is very heavy and we need to know and learn a lot of events, paintings, names, eras, and many more in such a short time frame, in which we also need to learn other 5 subjects with different assignments to deal with.

Moreover, this is the subject that makes me worry the most. It is hard.

Tough subject.

I really hope that i could pass and don't wanna fail this subject.

Thank you Professor Ray for your patience lecture class this semester. Your notes are incredible! Cheers and God bless you!

Laocoon Original Sculpture

My Artwork of Laocoon

Laocoon, son of Acoetes, is a figure in Greek and Roman mythology.

The Lady of Auxerre

Description:
Sculpted by Cretan ( 640-630 B.C ) by yellow limestone with 75cm height. This sculpture can be found in Musee du Louvre, museum in Paris.

This sculpture is less than half a life size. Her hair is very similar to the Egyptian female hairstyle. She's standing on a square base. She had a missing right part on her face. Her right hand is raised to her chest while left hand stay stiffly on the side of her body.

There are some elements of art in this sculpture. We can see lines here; vertical and horizontal and curve lines.  The vertical and horizontal lines form the pattern of her hair. Vertical lines all the way down from her hips ot her legs. Curve lines can be seen in the details on her face..

The texture of this sculpture is the texture of limestone. The nature of limestone is fragile. This explain the missing part of her face.

Her face is U-shaped. The whole sculpture is being made in human figure shape. It does not have the right proportion of human body; her upper body seems to be shorter while having an extremely long legs.

Analysis:

Cretan crafted this sculpture in yellow limestone with strong and vigorous Daedalic style.  The crafter adapting  Egyptian's culture in create the hair of the sculpture.

There are some principle of organisation found in this sculpture. This Lady of Auxerre is not having a correct human proportion. She had a longer leg with shorter upper body. Her right hand gesture suggest movements. The repetition of vertical and horizontal line of her hair suggest a sense of rhythm. She seems rigid  because of her stiff and solid appearance.

Subjective views:
I think that this sculpture looks like the goddess or queen of Egyptian because of the hair pattern and the outfit of the sculpture.

Judgement:
This Lady of Auxerre represents the goddesses of Syrian and Phoenician through the gesture of her right hand. The purpose to create this sculpture is to resemble an archaic Greek goddess. It  serves as a votary rather than the maiden Goddess Persephone.

Audience:
The museum at Paris commissioned this sculpture. There are some people who had been commissioned the sculpture such as Edouard Bourgoin and Maxime Collignon. Right now, Musee de Louvre commissioned the Lady of Auxerre.

The pictures show the wall paint of National Museum Malaysia and the Egypt wall paint. We can see that the wall paint of the Malaysia' museum is very much alike to the Egypt wall paint. The Egypt wall paint was really unique in terms of their art works being painted on the wall. It was one of the main elements of the Egypt. The wall paint in Museum Negara was painted through the concept of wall paint by Egypt. The colour the artist used to paint the museum wall was quite similar to the one from Egypt.

The National Stadium Bukit Jalil Malaysia obviously influenced by Penathenaic Stadium Kallimarmaro Greece. Firstly, the shape of the whole structure is mostly similar to each other; the curved and diagonal wall for the audience, and the rectangle with a semicircle on both the end of it. The purpose of the whole structure design is to enable the audience watch the event on the field. Besides, the community of the Greek loves sport. They defined the tern athlete. Honestly, the structure of the Greece stadium is very effective because the diagonal seats enable all the audience, regardless the distance from the field, to watch the events that was going on in the field.

SEGi College - One of the Buildings in Malaysia Which Influenced by Greek and Egypt culture

SEGi College, Malaysia
The pillars or columns of the building have the influenced from the Greek architecture, the ionic columns.

Buildings in Malaysia Which Have Been Influenced by Greek Or Egypt.

The building in Malaysia which applied the Greek's culture is the SEGi College. The pillar of the building here received Greek's culture of architecture which known as ionic columns. There are three types of column which are Order, Ionic and Corinthian columns. The head of the column in SEGi College significantly shows the architecture of Greek. The purpose of this influence from Greek in buildings in Malaysia is because the design of the ionic columns from Greek is very beautiful, fine and attractive. Alas, Malaysian included the design of ionic columns in SEGi College. The true meaning in this culture is to beautify the whole buildings through the fine design of the ionic column. It makes the whole building looks attractive and interesting.

Which one is the real Minotaur?

Based on what I've read, this is the Minotaur that was described in the story: a bull's head with a man's body.

However, this is what our lecturer shown us about Minotaur.

The question is, which one is the true Minotaur?

The Minotaur in the Labyrinth

Minotaur will not end up in the Labyrinth if not because of the greed of King Minos.

King Minos wants to get what he wanted through the Gods. So, he was planning to offer a ritual of sacrifice to Poseidon despite that he had nothing to offer. He just command a bull from the sea and eventually a white bull emerged and rise from the sea. Instead of sacrifice the white bull to Poseidon, he decided to keep it and offer one of the bull from the royal herd as a sacrifice.

Poseidon eventually mad at King Minos. In return, he makes Pasiphae, the wife of King Minos, to fall completely in lust with the white bull. She gets Daedalus to build a mechanical cow for her to climb inside with the appropriate part of her hanging out. Of course, King Minos knew none of these.

After some time, Pasiphae thought that she was having a baby with King Minos. However, the baby that she gave birth was having a bull's head instead of a normal human head. We all know that the baby was Minotaur.

King Minos was shamed publicly and Pasiphae hates the child and the white bull. He went to the oracle at Delphi to hide his shame. The oracle told him that Minotaur should be presented as a monster and trapped in a giant maze known as the Labyrinth. According to the oracle, Minotaur should be a fierce-flesh -eater and be given human sacrifices

Therefore, poor Minotaur was left alone in the Labyrinth and fed flesh. It wasn't normal for a cow to feed on meat, unless they are really starving. This is really terrible. Technically, Minotaur wasn't all alone in the Labyrinth because he had a younger half-sister by the name of Ariadne who knew how to get out from the Labyrinth. Eventually she taught Minotaur to speak in human tongue and befriends with him. At least he had a connection with human other than just food.

It all changed when Ariadne fall in love with Theseus who claimed to be a sacrifice for Minotaur. She convinced Theseus that he could be a hero by slaying Minotaur in the Labyrinth. She gave him a sword and a ball of twine so that he can find a way to get in and out from the Labyrinth after killed Minotaur, her brother and her friend.

Theseus does not believed what Minotaur told him before he killed him. The thing is, Theseus dumped Ariadne after killed Minotaur and became a hero.

Honestly, I think that Minotaur is completely innocent. King Minos should be punished for what he had done to Poseidon by just sacrificed a normal bull instead of the White Bull. It was terrible to fed a cow with flesh instead of grass. The worst thing is that human are willing to betrayed his or her own family just because of love. Men just forget those who have helped them in their times of need when they are successful.

History of Art and Design

Questions and Answers1. What do you want from the course?
2. What do you want to do in coming 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?
3. What do you hope to get from this particular classes?4. Is history Art and Design necessary do you think for longer goal?

I want to be a capable and successful comic artist after I graduate from this course. I know it sounds quite silly but it  is always my dream and passion to become a comic artist. I love to draw comic characters especially the one from Japan. However, its just what i want from this course. What I desire in my life is more that just a comic artist.

I want to deepen my understanding and knowledge about the history of Egypt and other elements in this subject. I really find it is hard for me to catch up the things which have been told in the class, especially we need to do our own research about the subject matters. I know its time for me or us to change the way we learn and study in order to survive in the society nowadays.

In this 5 years time, I hope I can graduate in two more years and having my stable job and income..The most important thing is, I can have my time to dance. Somehow, I still don't know where I stand and what I really wanna do and achieve in my life but right now I know that I need to do my best in university so that I can graduate proudly and productively.
In 10 years time, I wish to have my comic books published, be a dancer as my part time job,and capable to take care of my parents and family.
In 20 years time, I want to own a stylish and modern yet classic wooden house. I love the natural artistic texture of woods which is irreplaceable. By the time, I wish to serve my church and have a stable career to take good care of my parents.

It is necessary because we need to know how it emerged and developed until today. It was interesting to know some events in Egypt, especially about the Goddess and myth and the art they created on the wall. Somehow, I still blur and lost in this subjects. Maybe because I don't do necessary research about the subjects. Hopefully I can pass this subject because I ain't wanna fail and repeat any subjects here.
